About the community
ACT/CBR Rocks brings painted-rock creativity to Canberra, the ACT, the rest of Australia and beyond. Families are encouraged to decorate stones, leave them for others and search for creations in parks, playgrounds and other local places.
Preparing a rock
- Participants can choose a clean, dry and unpolished stone. White quartz and river rocks work well and can be purchased from local landscaping suppliers; polished, waxed and shiny glass stones are best avoided.
- Use good acrylic paint or acrylic paint pens rather than poster paint. Anko from Kmart and Born from Officeworks are suitable starting options, while Posca is a more expensive alternative.
- Before hiding the piece, seal the front and back so the design does not fade or peel outdoors. Spray sealers are available from stores such as Bunnings and Spotlight.
After a discovery
Artists enjoy seeing where their work travels, so post a photograph and mention where the stone was found. You may then hide it again in the same place or take it elsewhere and publish the new location, or keep it after letting the group know. When several rocks are together, take only some and leave or rehide the rest so other hunters can share the excitement.
Community expectations
- Posts must remain relevant to painted rocks and their discovery.
- Promotion of other pages or groups requires prior approval. Unapproved posts will be deleted, and repeated promotion may lead to removal and a ban.
- Because this public group can be viewed by non-members, notify the relevant person by tagging them instead of posting links to other groups when trying to identify a travelling rock.
- Never privately message a member to pressure them to join or post in another group. This breach of privacy will result in removal and a ban.
- Respect the community’s diversity and treat every member with kindness, support and consideration.
Questions, tips, techniques, artwork and favourite hiding or hunting places are all welcome. Unless you clearly state otherwise on the image or post, material shared here may be copied and used by members or visitors for any purpose.
Enjoy the group and keep on rocking.
