About the community
The group invites finders to photograph rocks and post their stories: where and when they were discovered, and whether they will be kept or hidden for someone else.
Participants decorate or paint rocks in any style, mark the underside ‘Post to Facebook “Humble TX Rock Hunt”’, and apply clear-coat sealant for waterproofing. Rocks are then left in parks or other special locations for others to discover. Group posts allow painters to see whether a finder has shared a photograph.
This simple, enjoyable project invites children, families, artists, and groups to brighten another person’s day by painting and hiding a rock for them to discover.
Rock-hunting tips:
- A kept rock should be replaced with one or two newly painted and hidden rocks. Finds may also be hidden again. Participants must never keep more rocks than they replace, so the activity can continue.
- Rocks must not be left inside businesses or in State Parks.
- The group recommends easy-to-find locations, avoiding grassy areas where rocks can damage lawn equipment.
- Clues to hiding places are optional; unexpected discoveries are part of the fun.
- The hunt is not limited to Humble, TX, and the group encourages leaving rocks in other parts of town too.
- Safety comes first: medians, roadsides and other risky locations are excluded.
- Members are encouraged to invite friends and neighbours to join.
- Members receiving too many Facebook notifications can change the setting through “Notifications” at the top of the page so every post does not appear in their news feed.
- Every rock should be marked on the back with “Post to Facebook- Humble TX Rock Hunt”.
- Water-based paint needs sealant against rain, dew and sprinklers. The group prefers clear spray sealant sold beside acrylic paint in craft stores.
- In parks, children should take only one rock, hide other finds again and leave some for later visitors. GOLDEN RULE: A kept rock should be replaced with one or two newly painted rocks.
- The group welcomes all questions, treating none as foolish, and values both the fun and the process.
- Kindness and consideration are required, especially as children often read the page. Mean comments, rude conduct or poor judgment may lead to removal at the administrators' discretion. Concerns should be reported to an administrator; the group's introduction expresses the hope that this will never be necessary.
