About the community
Inspired by friends in Mansfield, Texas, this group brings family and friends together to paint rocks and hide them around Gainesville to brighten people's days. A found rock may be moved and hidden again, left in place or kept.
The group asks participants to write Keep or Hide, You decide on the reverse of their artwork and post a photo on Facebook with #North TX Rocks. Personal hashtags are prohibited.
Its guidance reminds members that hunting and hiding take place outdoors, where awareness of wildlife is needed. Finding a rock on every outing is neither guaranteed nor an entitlement. The group emphasises giving as well as finding.
- Rocks must not be placed in dangerous locations, including parking spaces, high in trees, the middle of creeks, deep inside hollow trees, the centre of pavements, BBQ grills, traffic lanes or train tracks. The group calls for common sense.
- Rocks must be positioned clear of lawnmowers and weed trimmers.
- Private property requires permission, and rocks must never be placed inside businesses.
- Cemeteries are prohibited because mementos on graves could be mistaken for game rocks and taken.
- Hunting and hiding must not damage plants, and rocks must not be put in bird or insect houses.
- Rocks must not be removed from public or private landscaping. The group suggests buying river rocks from Home Depot or another supplier.
- Each rock represents its artist’s opinions and attitudes, rather than the administrator's. The administrator disclaims responsibility for offence or other issues.
- Blocking administrators or moderators, or harassing members for any reason, including stalking people who hide rocks, leads to removal and blocking.
- Artwork must be weatherproof.
- Posts that attempt to establish rules or concern subjects other than painted rocks, including wildlife or vegetation, are deleted.
- All traffic and pedestrian laws must be observed.
- Unless expressly stated otherwise, photographs of rock finds or hiding may be shared without permission.
- Members are expected to be kind. Negative posts, comments or arguments with administrators or members may result in removal and blocking.
The Gainesville Rocks administrators reserve the right to remove and block anyone whose posts, comments or behaviour slander or demean the group, its rules, members or administrators. This includes passive-aggressive posts or comments questioning the rules, group or administrators. The group does not serve as a personal forum for opinions on its operation. The rules state that this is the sole warning.
